Creation, Causality, and The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics

"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."
Albert Einstein

Started thinking about the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics which is basically the law of Entropy. A working definition of this 2nd Law and essentially entropy is that something left to it's own devices will move towards disorder.

For instance, ice cream melts, things get dirty, iron rusts, apples oxidize...

Another example would be, from wikipedia, that states the following, "the second law implies that heat does not spontaneously flow from a cold material to a hot material, but it allows heat to flow from a hot material to a cold material. Roughly speaking, the second law says that in an isolated system, concentrated energy disperses over time, and consequently less concentrated energy is available to do useful work.

So from a creation standpoint and from a person who believes in The Carpenter of Creation, a Creator God, how could the universe be created from random chance?

In the context of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics, how could order, the order and detail of the universe, be created from disorder. The only way ice cream can be frozen again is for some outside force, be it a human, to act upon it...namely placing it back into the freezer. In order for the stability and complexity of the universe to be created and remain in existence is to have The One and Only Creator God.

Whether you believe in The Creator God or not, you still have to come up with some explanation on causality...what caused the creation of the oxygen we breath, our hearts to beat, our minds that think, the grass that grows, the seasons that change? Actually, believing in some other way to explain the creation and existence of life, takes more faith than believing in God...

As a future doctor, God-Willing, I will use science, not avoid science, to strengthen my beliefs that, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1.1

Cognitive Horsepower

Really cool study in the February/March 2009 issue of Scientific American Mind about Cognitive Horsepower. Here is the short version:

In theory, "stress uses up the same cognitive horsepower that would typically be devoted to mental tasks, scuttling the performance of capable people who depend on their superior abilities," says Sian L. Beilock, psychologist at the University of Chicago.

"When you've got high levels of working memory, you actually use cognitive horsepower to do tasks,...and when you worry or stress during a test, then that stress is competing for the same resources as you are using to think at high levels and great speeds.

So if If you find yourself stressing during a test or another high level thinking activity, and your thinking, 'Crap,' then that worry is definitely a problem because it is competing for the same resources as your working memory.

Bottom Line: Stressing and worry want to use the same space and resources as high level thinking and problem solving. Don't let them compete. Quiet the mind so that you can think and ace all tests and other activities with a clear mind!

The solution: Do a "Real-Time Simulation." Rehearse in a situation similar to the performance scenario. Take timed tests, practice sports in extremely high pressured and intense environment, visualize, etc, so that when the heat is on during the real event, it will be like second nature to you and you will perform and excel at peak levels!

Decision Making: End Of Day Thinking

In the last post I mentioned the importance of the 38 Second rule by trusting your training and your subconscious, understanding that the gestalt can sometimes tell you all that you need to know. But to contrast this, I also mentioned how the most challenging decisions should sometimes be the most informed decisions...

Often, especially when time permits, it is best to let your decision making "slow-brew" into your subconscious which will allow you to think things over...another excerpt from Dr Groopman's amazing book, "How Doctors Think" provides us with an example:

Dr. Jeffrey Tepler is a hematologist and oncologist in private practice at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Tepler states the following: "I always go back and read the literature with almost every patient who has a nuanced clinical case, a variation of a diagnosis...I try hard to stay on top of my game."

"It's hard to think deeply about patients at the moment when you are seeing them. You need some quiet time to reflect and formulate a cogent opinion," states Dr Tepler.....

Dr Groopman then goes on to say, "For that reason, he (Dr Tepler) often tells patients that he wants to think more about their cases rather than immediately offer a treatment plan. He routinely leaves his office around eight-thirty or nine at night, devoting the end of the day to thinking. "

Decision Making: 38 Second Rule

In our decision making, sometimes the power of the subconscious is paramount. With the subconscious activated, We can see or know the gestalt where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Meaning that we can determine at a moment's notice or upon our first instinctive thought what we want Most of the time, thus knowing the answer fairly quickly. But what can and often does happen is this: We over analyze and fall into the "paralysis through analysis." This normally occurs because we focus too much on details, worry what other people think, or because we are insecure about our own decision making.

Over analyzing can lead us into the worst decision of all: Not Making One...

Teddy Roosevelt once said: “In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.”

When it comes to making wise decisions, we must make sure we do not see "false positives." Meaning, "seeing things that are not there." In his amazing book, "How Doctors Think," Jerome Groopman, MD talks about "The 38 Second Rule."

Dr. E. James Potchen at Michigan State University, studied Radiologists and their decision making abilities while reading films. Potchen goes on to say, "Ironically, if you look at a film too long, you increase the risk of hurting the patient." Looking "too long" they found occurred after 38 seconds, and this is where the false positives began to show up.

Dr Groopman states the following of Dr. Potchens beliefs: "this reflects their (radiologists) level of insecurity about what they are observing. Temperament can have a significant impact on diagnostic accuracy, even among doctors like radiologists...."

In our decision making, I totally believe that the most challenging decisions need to be the most informed decisions, but we must come to the point where we believe in ourselves and understand the main idea...the gestalt. Trust Yourself, Know The Main Idea, and don't worry what other people think. Apply the 38 Second Rule to your life and see what you decide!

Next Level: Casting My Net Into Deeper Water!

Great day of studying! The Lord has led me to the next level in becoming a Doctor! I took and aced mcat PTR 3 on-line today in real timed conditions! Totally simulated like the real thing, totally disciplined, back to back sections!

Because The Lord says so, I am casting my net into Deeper Water and by going Deeper I am catching more that I could ever imagine. (See Luke 5.1-11). By Going Deeper, I Trust that through God Almighty, I will become a Doctor. My goal is to Shine for God's Glory! (See Matthew 5.13-16)

What I learned:
1. Increased Confidence
2. Concentration - I need to zone in to "Animal"-like levels, I need to be an "Animal" so psyched up and totally focused. What this means is that I must enter "R-Brain" mode to the max!

How do I achieve total "R-Brain" Mode?
  • I must forget about the time. Keeping track of the time activates my "L-Brain" mode. I will certainly be aware of the time, but I will totally dive into the passage and discretes without concern for the time.
  • I am actually so well trained that timing is not an issue...The Lord has shaped my training to the point where I know my pace!
  • Relaxed Intensity: When Jeff and I run sprints on the track, We sprint with Max intensity, yet we are so relaxed that the skin on our cheeks around our jaws are bouncing around. Pocket to Nose, Pocket to Nose, We will establish amazing form from start to finish. Being relaxed yet with all-out intensity, We are able to sprint at max-out speeds! Having Relaxed Intensity on the mcat will allow me to perform at Championship levels under pressure circumstances! Bring It On mcat! I own you mcat!
  • Being In The Zone: So focused, with warrior-like focus, surgeon-like precision...I will become totally engrossed in the material that I am now "one" with the material... the mcat is a cloud of dust and I will blow right through it
  • Be Confident: Trust The Lord, Trust myself because I trust The Lord. By being totally confident that I know the correct answer, I will minimize over-analyzing and maximize correct answer producing and time saving techniques!
  • Enter "Race-Mode": As in track, when Jeff and I step up to the start line and get down in the blocks, "It Is On!" and we enter into "Race-Mode" By entering into "Race-Mode,"we become so ready in Heart, Soul, Mind, Body that we are primed and ready. All of our training is set and now it is time to allow our training and discipline and serious hard work to take over. Forget The Left brain notes and just flow in Right Brain mode. Your form, your technique, your drive and top-end speed all take their natural form and rhythm because you have trained and prepared for this moment...It will be this way as well as I move directly toward the mcat...I will enter "Race-Mode" and all my training, all my discipline and hard work will come together into their natural form and rhythm, and I will be calm, cool, and collected as I ace the mcat!
  • Take 5 second rest in between passages to recalibrate my mind for ultimate performance with the next set of passages and discretes that I will sling and conquer!
3. That I belong: I belong in the medical world and I can not wait to to conquer all the challenges along the way! I embrace these challenges! Amen!. JIL! PX! I want the long nights, the 80 hour weeks, the 20 hour shifts, I want to be awake for 25 hours straight. I want to learn everything about God's Amazing creation of the human being as I can. I want to train and learn with so much intensity and do whatever it takes to become the best Doctor I can in order to provide for my Family, my Community, My patients. I want to live the full life that Jesus Lived, Died, and Resurrected for!

4. By being poised and rooted in composure, having major confidence, having Surgeon-like concentration and Warrior-like Focus, By entering into "Race-Mode" and knowing that I belong, I will follow God Almighty through this Red Sea into the Promise Land of becoming an MD! By His Will, IN His Timing, Because of His Mercy and Grace, Through His Power, and For His Glory I have Trust and Faith that I will become a Doctor! To God Be The Glory! Amen!

Father God, with Your Cross In My Heart, Your Wisdom In My Mind, Your Medicine n My Soul, Your Stethoscope Around My Neck, and Your Healing In My Hands, I thank you for this opportunity to become a Doctor and I will commit my life to You in order for You to use this as Your Ministry Through me! Harooh! ~From Jeff's Prayer~

For Your Glory Alone!

Learning Early:God Ordinances!

So the other night, I am reading the awesome book, "How Doctors Think," by Jerome Groopman, and I come across a story about a patient with Cardiac tamponade, also known as pericardial tamponade. It is an emergency condition where there is a compression of the heart that occurs when blood or fluid builds up in the space between the myocardium (the muscle of the heart) and the pericardium (the outer covering sac of the heart).

Basically, fluid accumulates in the pericardium (the sac in which the heart is enclosed). If the fluid significantly elevates the pressure on the heart it will prevent the heart's ventricles from filling properly. This in turn leads to a low stroke volume. The end result is ineffective pumping of blood, shock, and often death.

Dr. Groopman explains in like a fist, squeezing the heart, keeping blood from entering or exiting...

Dr Groopman was using this story to explain how as a Doctor, one needs to always question why procedures are performed or treatments are given or diagnoses are made. This particular case had the surgeon make an incision under the xiphoid process and then go into the pericardium with a big syringe to draw off the fluid...the surgeon ended up going through the pericardium and into the heart, causing massive bleeding...this case was demonstrated to show how currently, Doctors view the heart first with echocardiogram to make sure where exactly the fluid is before they go probing...and maybe now, they are x-ray guiding as they actually perform this maneuver, I need to research this...seems like a good idea...

But, I say that to say this...I go upstairs and turn on "Untold Stories, Life In The ER," that is on the "Discovery Health" channel, and guess what a male patient that is carted into the ER is diagnosed with? Yes! Cardiac tamponade! You guessed right! Look, I don't believe in circumstances, but what I do believe in is God-Ordained Ordinances...I believe God has a way of teaching us and He will use whatever means necessary!

As He is teaching me and training me to become a Doctor, MD, I thought it was so cool how He showed me this. Some people may dismiss this as a coincidence, whatever, I see it as God leading me to the right resources at the right time. He has a given us a Reticular Activating System for a reason and He allowed me to form a category for Cardiac tamponade that night!

I believe as I continue to do my part and study and work and drench my self into all the resources He leads me to that He will continue to teach me everything I need to know about Human Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry, Surgery, etc...you name it! What an Honor to be able to be training to become a Doctor and learning all about His Amazing Creation!

Back to the story about the guy in the ER...He had to be operated on right there in the ER, no time to prep him for surgery...The ER Physician performed what he called, "Splash and Slash," meaning he had to immediately splash on a dose of Betadine to sterilize the patient's chest area and then use a scalpel to open him up...He made an incision under the left pectoral, more to the side, where he looked in from this side view, saw the heart, saw the clot, they then grabbed what looks like a corkscrew of sorts, (I need to find out what this is) and opened up the ribs so that he could release this fluid and the clot...

The patients heart was cyanotic due to the lack of oxygen, but once the clot was removed and the fluid gone, the heart started beating again and he was then transferred to a cardio-thoracic sugeon to make sure all was clear! He was great and had an amazing recovery! PX! AMEN! JIL!

Cool stuff, cool stories, Praise God for how He teaches! Cardiovascular is one of my interest and in the Top 5 of specialites I will God-Willingly be choosing from in about 4 Years!!! So I was definitely pumped to go ahead and "Jump-Start" my Cardiovascular Training through these awesome second-hand accounts! Hey, we "See One, Do One, Teach One," right? This is a great start! PX! JIL! AMEN!

Deeper Squared!

The Lord took me "Deeper" today! Whoo!

Aced Kaplan FL's 1-3 + AAMC PTR's 3-5 discretes for a comprehensive review to zone in on this past weeks training!

After that, I started taking the AAMC PTR 6 under timed conditions, broke it up into "mini-mcat" style by doing passages 1-4 VR followed by Passages 1-4 + 1st discrete set in Physical Sciences! God-Willing, I will take Bio Sciences passages 1-4+1st discrete set tomorrow or Monday!!!!

The Lord Blessed me to be in a total zone! I was at NS Sbx, had my headphones cranking with Soundtracks from "The Natural," "Back To The Future," "Chariots Of Fire," and "Resurrection from Passion Of The Christ!" I then cranked up 'Pandora' with my play list for "Johann Sebastian Bach" with my iPhone App and went to town! Scored 12 on PS and 11 on VR, both with time to spare! Acing The Pace! Acing The Pace!

It is on! The Lord is Calling Me to Go Deeper and I will Because He Says So! Man, Jeffrey, thank you so much for inspiring me through your teachings of Luke 5, "Leaving The Shallow: Taught Or Caught" and your Devo about Jesus and the woman at the well, titled "If You Only Knew!" You have totally reformatted my thinking and confidence!!! PX for You BroTwin! Harooh and Amen! JIL!

Excellence and Genius is created through God's Ordained gifts+our dedication and perseverence...persevering to accomplish those breakthrough's in life that put us in the zone, in the flow!

I will ace the mcat and God-Willing receive a full scholarship to Med School!!!

The Awesome Book of Hebrews says, “[By Faith] Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”- Hebrews 11:1

I have total Faith in God's Ordained Calling in my life, and through the sensitivity of The Holy Spirit, I will continue to follow Him, Praying the He will continue to Bless me to grow as a Follower of Jesus Christ, as a Family member, as a human being, as a Medical Doctor...and as I grow the more I will be able to give....as Mark Batterson says, "Grow more so we can Give more!"

Jesus, You gave all of yourself to me, now take all of me for Yourself!

Genius Level!

Jeffrey really inspired me today when he told me how all the studies out are showing that Genius Level is reached not so much by being a phenom or a prodigy, but rather by those who persevere and work smart+hard...to those who make breakthroughs comes Genius Levels!

Like Erwin McManus says, "Work Hard Until It's Hardly Work!"

God has given me a mind to think and to create and to solve problems. A mind that loves science and medicine. A Spirit infused with The Stirrings Of The Holy Spirit and the wanting to study and practice everything I can to learn and understand about His Creation of The Human Mind, Body, And Soul. I will work hard and persevere, I will continue to make Breakthroughs as God splits The Red Sea, I will follow Him through it with 100% Intensity!

I will work hard until it is hardly work. I will become a Genius Doctor. I will, because God has put Medicine In My Soul!

Pearl Review!

The Lord led me to review Kaplan FL 1 & 2 Discretes...man, I can not tell you how much I Praise The Holy Spirit for leading me in this direction! Developed some major "ingraining" and constructed pearls of wisdom on how to understand and remember key principles!

I will ace Kaplan FL 3 Discretes tomorrow God-Willing!

Made a "Secret" sheet that decoded all Physics Lens Pearls! Got It! I have got them now! Whoo! I am about to go and review the secret sheet now!

I will continue this pearl review and ingraining throughout the rest of the week and then celebrate with a "Mock Meet" on Saturday, taking a full length mcat and I mean taking it down! (Saying it with an Australian accent:)

Would love to get one of the online mcat's from e-mcat.com, I will make the decision by Friday!

The Lord Is Completely Dependable!

"The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he'll do it!"

~1 Thessalonians 5.23-24 ~

The Lord is dependable! I will focus all my energy on Him, not of myself...my strength will draw from Him...I know I can do all things through Him who strengthens me, and this is not a feel good bumper sticker, this is truth and I will live it!

God, thank you for choosing me to become a Doctor. Thank You that You do not want a substitute. Thank You that in the same way You told Moses and Aaron that You would be right there next to them teaching them what to say and how to say it, that You are doing the same with me. Just as David destroyed goliath because David attacked in The Strong Name Of God Almighty, may I attack the mcat in Your Strong Name! Slinging My Stone and bringing down the mcat.

Lord you called David, You did not want a substitute. You are calling me. You do not want a substitute. You are choosing me. I will not make you angry by objecting. I accept Your call with Humbleness and Honor. I will pick up my sword, carry my shield, and dedicate my life to You and Your Purposes through me.

You have given me Your Son. I will not dishonor You. Jesus You have given me all of You. Now take all of Me...You are Completely Dependable...I will live my life in Trust of Your Power! Do Your Will In Me and Through Me! For Your Glory God, Soli Deo Glori!

Sense Of Destiny! Race Mode!

Praise God! I am really developing a sense of destiny...a sense of God's Purpose to become a Doctor...an Instrument Of His Healing! PX! Harooh!

He is teaching me about the importance of risk, of not hiding and "letting them see me...' He is teaching me about His Grace...His Leadership!

Thoughts From Athletics...VisionFrom Family
Just as he has trained me to be a Championship athlete with Jeff, He is training me now to be a Doctor, MD and Jeff and our family are "Making Me Better!" They are really giving me a VISION instilling belief and confidence...Thank You God for speaking through TheFam!!!

I want this with "Track-Like" Intensity... I want to become a doctor almost more than any goal I have ever set because I want to be able to provide for my family, my community, my patients...

God has given us amazing abilties as athletes and He has allowed Athletics to teach me so much about training yourself to persevere instead of to quit...to embrace pain...to go "the distance"...to set goals and visualize...to believe deep with in your core that you were created to be a Champion...and I Praise God how He shapes us and uses what He has given us to become the people He desires...And I love Athletics with a passion and they are an area of my life where I have been able to perform at my utmost, it is so Awesome to have the same adrenaline rushing spirit, mind, and body for a career choice such as becomig Doctor Bradley Justin Nesbit, MD, MPT...because it is more than a career, it is a Ministry that I know God will work through! Thank You God for allowing us to join in with Your Process of being molded for Your Glory!

I am at the starting line, it's time to enter RACE MODE!

Cool Stuff!

Here is what The Lord led me to Hammer down on today...

* Acid/Base Chemistry
* Electrochemistry
* 2 passages of EK VR
* Kaplan FL 3, passages 1-4+discretes (PhySci),
passages 1-3+discretes (BioSci)Learned some
major material and furthered my knowledge
and ability in learning the foreign language of
mcat speak!

Ready for some Cool Stuff? Money metals such as (Gold, Lead, Silver, etc) do not rust like other metals!!! You know why? Because they have very high negative oxidation states!!!

Dude, how cool is that! It means that because their oxidation state is a very negative #, thus being far away from zero, it is harder to oxidized (lose electrons)...which translates into saying that metals are not good reducing agents!!! Reducing agents become oxidized!

So the next time you pull out a quarter, be confident knowing that that 25 cent piece of power will not rust! Whoo! ok, I will calm down now!

Look forward to tomorrow God-Willing! I am going to continuing "sweeping the leg" of Kaplan FL 3, it is going down BIG time! Harooh!

Take It To The Next Level!

Great day of studying but I am a little frustrated that I did not hit the books as long as I wanted. Got off to a later start, did not really start until 12, had a big gap, and then did not start back until 3 and finished about 1730...I wanted to continue to do more on my application as well but was not able to get to it...this kind of inefficiency will not happen again!

Even though I did not get in as much as I wanted, I maximized my time that I did put in and aced an OChem discretes kaplan test! Then I did 3 problems from every chapter in Physics!

I love the properties of waves (light waves). They are electromagnetic and their velocity depends on the medium. So even though V = (f)(lambda)...frequency times wavelength applies, the velocity still only depends on the medium...what happens is if you change the frequency, the inverse of the frequency will be the result of the wavelength and vice versa...but if length does not change, wavelength remains constant...

Nutshell: Wave properties to double check and pearl: Light Waves are dependent of their velocity; Sound waves are independent of their velocity or do sound waves become dependent on how deformable the medium is??? I know this, Sound Waves are longitudinal :) Whoo!

Cant wait to research this and apply it! PX! Amen! JIL! Time to take it to the next level!

Cool Pearl!

Aced and finished up with Kaplan FL 2...I really dissected the sucker and developed some major pearls! God is turning on some major lightbulbs and I am seeing everything so clearly as He parts The Red Sea and I walk through it with Him!

A Cool Pearl The Spirit led me to see is deciphering which amino acids are essential & non-essential for different Microbes. The way I "see" it is by deciding where the Microbes can grow even with certain amino acids absent. If the Microbes can grow without certain amino's, then those amino's are non-essential...thus, by eliminating the non-essentials, you can determine the essential amino's! How freakin' cool is that! PX! I love when The Holy Spirit speaks to me in these problem solving ways!

I will finish up with Kaplan Ochem Subject based discretes 1 Tomorrow and then hit EK 1001's, Other Subject based passage tests, and then on to dissecting either another Kaplan mcat or an aamc....saving up for the aamc timed internet based test that mirrors the real thing in real conditions....cant wait to ace it!!!

One more day closer to acing the mcat and becoming a doctor God-Willing!

Calm, Cool, & Collected!

Quiet Confidence, the composure of Joe Montana bringing his team back in the 4th quarter. This is the mindset I am developing in mcat studies and will bring to the mcat when I take it down in Sep!

It's like running track. Jeff and I have relaxed intensity...We are going full out, but we are so relaxed that our cheeks are bouncing around...no tension whatsoever!

I am and will be clear-minded...like a samurai, blowing through the mcat like a cloud of dust!

I will be calm, cool, & collected!

Father, It's Time!

I love The Prayer of Jesus, The Prayer He speaks to God for His Followers in John 17...

The Message Paraphrase says it so cool:

Jesus said these things. Then, raising his eyes in prayer, he said: Father, it's time. Display the bright splendor of your Son So the Son in turn may show your bright splendor.
(Emphasis Added)

Listen, I don't claim to be Jesus, but I love to model this Prayer. I Pray I will display the bright splendor of God my Father by becoming a Doctor. I feel like it is time. A Major reason I believe this is because of my Intense Prayers with Him and through The Counsel of The Holy Spirit. Confirmation after confirmation and being sensitive to The Holy Ghost, I feel as though I am ready to become a Doctor and for it to be my Ministry to SHINE for God's Glory!

Today was Awesome, PX!...Kaplan FL 2, I did the following:

Physical Sciences psgs III & IV + 2nd sxn of discretes
VR passages VI & VII
Biological Psgs III & IV + 2nd sxn of discretes

PX the mcat went down today. I am feeling it! In The Zone BIG Time. God is splitting this Red Sea in my life, as He always has, is, and will!

I continue to Trust God and the gifts He has given me, trusting myself because of my Trust In God! I am thankful for my family & Their Fasting/Prayers; for how He is using them to prepare my way to become a Doctor, MD. I Pray I am helping them and making an impact on them as they are for me. I know this, I am going to be super intentional to do so! PX!

Attack VR!

Great day of Studies! PX!

Kaplan GenChem: Electrochemistry Subject Test (mini mcat)
Kaplan Physics: Electric Circuits Subject Test (mini mcat)

More reps the better I get, the more I know the formulas the better I understand the theory! The more I read the passages and questions, the better I see "the code" of the mcat!

Verbal Reasoning: started VR in Kaplan FL 2, passage one, studied it without time limits in a "dissection" method. I found that I must Trust God, Trust myself because I trust God, and believe that I "see it" and that God has made me a Genius, so I know the answer to all the questions and I understand the passages and questions, so what I need to do is read and absorb, no analyzing, and then attack the questions, run straight towards them and take them down!

I am finding that the faster and "In The Zone" I read, the better I "feel" the answer, I need to mark the correct answer and move forward, no hesitation, no analyzing, all out attack!

mcat going down, down down down, mcat going down!

PX! Jesus Is Lord! Amen!
